Antalya Airport to Pamukkale Transfer

Pamukkale, whose name means cotton castle in Turkish, is a hillside of brilliant white terraces formed over thousands of years by mineral-rich thermal water flowing down the slope and leaving behind layers of travertine. The result is a series of shimmering pools and ledges that look almost like frozen waterfalls against the green plain below.

Directly above the terraces stands Hierapolis, an ancient Greco-Roman spa city with a large theatre, colonnaded streets, temples and a vast necropolis. The whole area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combining a rare natural wonder with major archaeology in a single visit.

Most travellers come to walk barefoot on the white travertines, explore the ruins of Hierapolis and, if they wish, bathe in the warm thermal Antique Pool among fallen Roman columns. Return transfers from Pamukkale to Antalya Airport are easy to arrange at the same time as your arrival booking, and many travellers book a one-way ride and stay overnight in the area. Because the drive is around 185 minutes, leave with a generous buffer for catching a return flight.

For the site itself, comfortable shoes, sun protection, water and swimwear are useful, as you walk barefoot on the travertines and may want the thermal pool. Early morning and late afternoon are often the most pleasant and least crowded times to visit, especially in high summer.

A typical visit combines two things in one ticket area: the white travertine terraces and the ruined ancient city of Hierapolis above them. You usually enter through a gate, walk up or down the calcium slopes, and can spend anywhere from a couple of hours to most of a day depending on how much you explore.

To protect the terraces, visitors walk barefoot on the white travertines, so it is normal to carry your shoes for that stretch. The water in the open pools is shallow and warm in places, though not every pool is open for paddling at all times.

Hierapolis itself rewards a longer look, with its well-preserved theatre, ancient streets, baths and one of the largest necropolises in the region. The separate Antique Pool lets you swim in warm mineral water among submerged Roman columns. The site is open-air and involves a fair amount of walking, but it suits families, and arriving rested after a smooth transfer means you can enjoy it fully.
