Phaselis Ancient City (Phaselis Antik Kenti) was an important harbour town founded by Greek colonists from Rhodes and later flourished as a busy trading port on the borders of Lycia and Pamphylia. Its great asset was the sea: three separate harbours allowed ships to shelter and trade in almost any wind.

The ruins are spread along a wooded peninsula and are easy to wander on foot. A paved main street runs between the harbours, lined with the remains of shops, baths and an agora, and leads past the well preserved theatre carved into the hillside.

After the city the road becomes one of the most scenic stretches on the coast, winding between the pine-covered slopes of the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean, with the sea appearing and disappearing through the trees. The final turn drops down a quiet forest lane to the Phaselis site entrance and car park.

Because the price is fixed per vehicle, the fare does not change if traffic is heavier in the busy summer months. Your driver tracks your flight, so even if you land early or late, someone is there waiting and the agreed price stays the same.

Phaselis was founded around the 7th century BC and passed through Lycian, Persian, Hellenistic and Roman hands over its long life, even welcoming Alexander the Great as he marched along the coast. Much of what stands today, including the main street, the baths and the gate of Hadrian, dates from the Roman period when the city prospered as a trading hub.

Allow roughly two to three hours to explore comfortably, more if you want to swim between visits to the theatre, the agora and the harbours. The site rewards a slow walk, as the path links all three ancient harbours along the shore.

Phaselis is suitable for families, though small children should be supervised near the water and on the uneven stone paths. There is an entrance fee to the archaeological site, so it is worth carrying a little cash for tickets and refreshments.
