Antalya Airport to Xanthos Transfer

Xanthos (Ksanthos) was the largest city and political centre of ancient Lycia, set on a hill above the Xanthos River, today the Eşen Çayı. For centuries it led the Lycian League, and its story is marked by two sieges in which its people famously chose to perish rather than fall under foreign rule.

The site is best known for its distinctive funerary monuments. Tall pillar tombs rise above the ruins, including the Harpy Tomb and the so-called Pillar of Xanthos, while a well preserved Roman theatre sits at the heart of the city beside the agora.

Xanthos is also famous for its inscriptions, including a long pillar text that is one of the most important sources for the Lycian language. Many original carvings were removed in the 19th century, but the dramatic setting and the standing monuments still make it one of the most rewarding ancient cities on the Lycian coast.

The drive from Antalya Airport to Xanthos runs roughly 230 km and usually takes about 195 minutes door to door. The route heads southwest, passing Antalya before following the coastal and inland roads through the Kaş and Kalkan region towards Kınık, where the ancient city stands.

It is one of the longer transfers on this coast, but also one of the most scenic. The road winds between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean, with sea views, pine forest, greenhouses and small Lycian towns along the way before the final approach to the Xanthos site near Kınık.

Bring water, a hat, sun protection and comfortable shoes, as the site is open with little shade and the paths between the monuments are uneven. Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable times to visit, with milder temperatures than the peak of summer.

Xanthos sits close to Patara, Letoon and the resort towns of Kalkan and Kaş, so it combines well with a wider tour of Lycia. Return transfers back to the airport or on to your hotel are easy to add to the same reservation, with a fixed price both ways and a driver who already knows your schedule.

Xanthos has a history reaching back well over two thousand years and was the leading city of the Lycians, a people known for their independence. Ancient writers record that the city was besieged twice, by the Persians and later during the Roman civil wars, and that on both occasions many of its defenders chose death over capture, a story that gave Xanthos a lasting reputation for fierce pride.

Allow roughly one and a half to two hours to explore the theatre, the pillar tombs, the agora and the Lycian inscriptions at a comfortable pace. The nearby sanctuary of Letoon, also a UNESCO site, pairs naturally with a visit if you have time.

Xanthos is suitable for families, though small children should be supervised on the uneven stone paths and around the open monuments. There is an entrance fee to the archaeological site, so it is worth carrying a little cash for tickets and refreshments.
