The first question is whether your layover is long enough to be worth leaving. Lara is the more practical choice on a short stop given its proximity, while Konyaalti pairs well with the old town as both sit on the city side. Remember you will not have much time to swim, change and dry off, so treat it as a walk along the promenade, a paddle and a seaside meal rather than a full beach day. Always keep your return clock running and avoid the temptation to linger.

The trip back is where layovers go wrong, so plan it backwards from your boarding time. For an international departure, aim to be at the airport at least two to three hours before, then add 25 to 40 minutes for the return journey from the city, plus a buffer for traffic, which builds in the late afternoon. The tram is cheap but adds walking and waiting; a taxi is faster but subject to traffic and queues.
