Alanya is a coastal city in the far east of the Antalya province, built around a dramatic rocky peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean. The headland is crowned by a large medieval castle, while below it the modern town spreads along the shore with hotels, restaurants and a palm-lined promenade.

Visitors come for the combination of warm sea, long beaches and a genuinely lived-in town centre rather than a closed resort strip. The harbour fills with boats offering coastal trips, the bazaar streets are busy into the evening, and landmarks such as the castle and the seafront Red Tower give the city a strong sense of place.

The drive from Antalya Airport to Alanya covers about 125 km and takes roughly 90 minutes in normal traffic. After leaving the terminal, the route joins the coastal highway heading east towards Serik, Manavgat and on to Alanya, a well-maintained dual carriageway that carries most of the region's traffic.

Much of the journey runs close to the Mediterranean, with the Taurus Mountains rising inland to the north and stretches of pine forest, banana plantations and sea views along the way. Closer to Alanya the highway skirts the coast before branching off to your hotel.

Alanya is best known for its beaches, above all Cleopatra Beach, a long stretch of fine sand on the western side of the peninsula that is the city's signature spot. More sandy and pebbly bays run east and west of the centre, so most accommodation is within easy reach of the sea.

The main beach season runs roughly from late spring through to autumn, when the Mediterranean is warm and the days are reliably sunny. High summer brings the hottest, busiest weather, while late spring and early autumn are calmer and still very swimmable.

For a beach day it helps to bring sun protection, water and beach shoes, as some shoreline areas are pebbly. Many beaches have sunbeds and cafés nearby, and the calm, gradually deepening water makes the city a comfortable choice for families.
